Harold Godwinson the earl of Wessex was voted by the English people to be their king. The English believed that he should be their king because he was the most powerful earl of the time.
Before then Harold was the earl of East Anglia until he and his father were exiled in 1051 only to return with his father (who was also exiled but in 1046) in 1052. After they returned they moved to Wessex where his father became the Earl. A year later Harold succeed his father after he died. His sister married Edward the Confessor sometime in the middle
